ATS Resume Keywords for Software Engineers: What to Include and Why
Software engineering roles get a high volume of applications. Most companies hiring at scale use ATS systems — Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, iCIMS, Taleo — that filter resumes before a recruiter opens them. Those systems match the text of your resume against the text of the job description.
The issue is not that you lack the skills. The issue is that the exact string your resume uses and the exact string the job description uses may not match, and the system scores them as a gap.
This guide covers the keywords that actually matter for software engineering roles, organised by specialisation, and explains how to use them correctly.
The abbreviation problem
Before the keyword lists: this is the most common and easiest mistake to fix.
ATS systems vary in how they handle abbreviations. Lever understands word stems but will not expand "JS" to "JavaScript." Taleo treats them as completely different strings. iCIMS rewards exact terminology over abbreviations.
The safest approach: write the full term and the abbreviation together, at least once.
- "JavaScript (JS)" not just "JS"
- "User Experience (UX)" not just "UX"
- "Search Engine Optimization (SEO)" not just "SEO" — if the role involves SEO
- "Continuous Integration / Continuous Deployment (CI/CD)" not just "CI/CD"
- Certification names in full: "Amazon Web Services (AWS)" not just "AWS"
Once you have written the full term, using the abbreviation elsewhere in the resume is fine. The full-form version is what the search needs to find.
Core keywords that apply across most software engineering roles
These appear consistently in job descriptions regardless of specialisation:

Frontend
If the role specifies React, your resume should say React — not "component-based UI framework" or "modern JavaScript library." If the description uses "TypeScript" and your resume says "typed JavaScript," those are different strings to most parsers.

Exact framework names matter here more than anywhere. "Python web framework" does not match "Django." "Java backend development" does not match "Spring Boot."

Fullstack
For fullstack roles, list both frontend and backend keywords where genuine. The job description will indicate which stack the company uses — match it specifically.
Commonly searched combinations MERN stack (MongoDB, Express, React, Node.js), MEAN stack, React + Node.js, Python + React, Ruby on Rails + React, Next.js + PostgreSQL
DevOps and Cloud
This is the area where abbreviation problems are most costly. "AWS" and "Amazon Web Services," "K8s" and "Kubernetes," "GCP" and "Google Cloud Platform" — write both in the same document.

Data science and ML roles are particularly keyword-specific because hiring managers and ATS configurations often filter on exact tool names.

Mobile
iOS and Android development have distinct keyword sets. If you work on both, list each platform's stack explicitly.

How to actually use these keywords
The keyword list is not a checklist to paste into your skills section. It is a reference for auditing your resume against a specific job description.
Step 1. Read the job description and identify the 8 to 12 terms that appear in the requirements section or appear more than once.
Step 2. Check your resume for those exact terms. Not synonyms — the exact strings.
Step 3. For terms you have genuine experience with but have not used in your resume, add them. The natural locations are: your skills section, your summary, and the experience bullets where the skill was actually used.
Step 4. Write out abbreviations in full alongside the short form, at least once.
Step 5. Do not add keywords for skills you do not have. ATS filters the resume; the interview filters you. A keyword added dishonestly gets you a conversation you cannot sustain.
