Sales & Account Executive Resume Keywords: What ATS Systems Look For in 2026
Sales hiring runs on numbers, and so does the applicant tracking system that screens it. Account executive and sales roles attract enormous applicant volume, and the first cut is made by a system scanning for methodology, CRM tools, deal-cycle vocabulary — and quota attainment figures. A sales resume that reads as a list of responsibilities without the metrics and terms recruiters search for gets ranked down quickly, no matter how strong the actual track record.
Sales is also the one category where the keywords and the proof are the same thing. "Exceeded quota" is both an ATS keyword and the single most important claim on the page. The categories below cover the vocabulary that recurs across AE and sales job descriptions. Include what's genuinely true, in the form the posting uses — and put your numbers where both the ATS and the recruiter will find them.
Metric and Performance Keywords
These carry the most weight on a sales resume, and many descriptions filter for them directly:
Quota and quota attainment — the defining sales metric. "Exceeded quota," "110% of quota," "President's Club" are all strong signals. Put your actual attainment percentage on the page.
Revenue — "generated $X in revenue," "grew revenue by Y%." The dollar figure is both proof and keyword.
Pipeline — building and managing pipeline; near-universal. Pair with "pipeline generation."
Bookings and ARR / MRR (Annual/Monthly Recurring Revenue) — SaaS sales vocabulary; strong signals for tech AE roles.
Win rate and close rate — conversion metrics for more analytical descriptions.
Deal size and ACV (Annual Contract Value) — signal the tier of deals you've handled.
Methodology Keywords
Consultative selling and solution selling — dominant modern sales approaches; frequently cited.
MEDDIC / MEDDPICC, Challenger, SPIN, or Sandler — named sales methodologies. Include the ones you've actually been trained in; they're strong differentiators and the ATS matches the exact name. MEDDIC in particular signals enterprise B2B experience.
Prospecting and cold outreach — top-of-funnel activity; "cold calling," "outbound" where relevant.
Discovery — the qualification stage; "discovery calls" appears in many AE descriptions.
Negotiation and closing — the bottom of the funnel; near-universal.
Deal-Cycle and Motion Keywords
Full-cycle sales — signals you own the deal end to end, from prospecting to close; a strong AE keyword.
B2B or B2C — match the JD; the sales motion differs sharply.
Inbound and outbound — the lead source; many roles specify one.
Account management and upsell / cross-sell / expansion — for roles focused on existing customers rather than new logos.
New business and net-new logos — for hunter roles focused on acquisition.
Sales cycle — "shortened the sales cycle," "managed a 90-day sales cycle" — signals you understand deal velocity.
Tool Keywords
CRM — include the general term and the specific system: Salesforce, HubSpot, or Microsoft Dynamics. Salesforce is the most-scanned sales tool; if you've used it, it belongs on the page.
Outreach, Salesloft, or Gong — sales engagement and call-intelligence platforms; strong signals for modern tech-sales roles.
LinkedIn Sales Navigator — prospecting tool cited in outbound-heavy descriptions.
ZoomInfo or Apollo — data/prospecting tools.
Segment and Vertical Keywords
SMB, Mid-Market, or Enterprise — the customer segment. Match it exactly; enterprise selling and SMB selling are treated as different skills.
SaaS, fintech, healthcare, or another vertical — industry familiarity that many descriptions filter for.
What to Leave Out
Don't inflate numbers. Quota attainment is often verified through references and back-channel checks, and a figure you can't substantiate becomes a liability. If a year was below quota for a reason (new territory, product transition), that's a conversation, not a fabrication.
And skip the generic sales filler: "go-getter," "hunter mentality," "results-driven," "hungry." These aren't keywords, they appear on every sales resume, and they take space from the quota figures and methodology terms that actually differentiate you.
The Right Way to Match
Strong sales resumes lead with quantified outcomes tied to methodology and motion: "Full-cycle Enterprise AE selling B2B SaaS; closed $2.1M in net-new ARR at 128% of quota using a MEDDIC-qualified pipeline in Salesforce" earns full-cycle, Enterprise, B2B SaaS, ARR, quota, MEDDIC, and Salesforce in a single line that a recruiter reads as proof. That is far stronger than a list of duties.
The goal isn't to collect every sales term. It's to make the resume accurate, matched to the segment and motion of the specific role, and — above all — carrying the numbers that make the case.
